by Eric Overmyer
Join us for a supremely mirthful safari with whacky guides Alexandra (Liz Jahren), Fanny (Laura Jorgenson) and Mary (Jessica Powell). Equipped with dialog as pithy as their helmets, the ladies thwack their machetes through the wilderness, spinning giddily from geographic sojourn into glorious time travel. Start time: 1888; end time: 1955 and counting! Opera #1 La Bohème
by Giacomo Puccini
Put your opera glasses away - you don't need them at Cinnabar. Get your opera up close and personal. Puccini’s most beloved melodies tell the story of six young Bohemians as they experience the hilarities and sorrows of friendship, art and love while living on the edge of Parisian society. If you've never been to an opera, this one, performed in English in our intimate setting, is the best introduction you can have. Seasoned veterans know that, no matter how many times we see this opera, it never fails to touch our hearts. Cinnabar’s talented young singers are a joy to behold and a delight to hear. You can't miss the lyrical beauty and the emotional impact. And remember: La Bohème makes the ultimate romantic date!
Single Tickets: Presale $35 General/$32 Senior & Student, Door $38/35. Subscription: save 20%.

Musical #2 Ella: The American Dream
World Premiere: Written and performed by Kim Nalley
American Idol has nothing on Ella Fitzgerald’s rags to riches story: the Apollo audiences were worse than a thousand Simon Cowells and Ella was homeless, a bedraggled vagrant who danced in the streets for meager handouts. How did a homeless New York street dancer become America’s First Lady of Song? Set in 1930’s Harlem, Ella: the American Dream features the swinging music of Ella Fitzgerald, finger popping dance reminiscent of the Cotton Club and cameos by Duke, Billie, Frankie Manning and more. Based on new historical findings about Ella’s humble beginnings, this play will leave you feeling optimistic and yearning for more.
Single Tickets: Presale $32 General/$28 Senior & Student, Door $35/30. Subscription: save 20%.

Play #2 *Is He Dead?
by Mark Twain; adapted by David Ives
Rumors of this play were not exaggerated - it received its world premiere on Broadway in 2006 - and it's a live one! Jean-François Millet, a brilliant but unrecognized painter, can’t sell a landscape to save his life (literally). His wacky bohemian friends convince him that faking his death is just the ticket for raising his stock. So Jean-François disappears from life and re-emerges as his imaginary twin sister, a widow both mad and madcap. Here's gold dust in your eyes, as extended horseplay involving the stench of Limburger cheese and the deconstruction of a woman of "artificial parts" will make you howl for more.
Single Tickets: Presale $25 General/$20 Senior & Student, Door $28/22. Subscription: save 20%.

Opera #2 *Emmeline
by Tobias Picker
Massachusetts, 1841. 13-year-old Emmeline is sent to work in the mills to help support her family, who have fallen on hard times. Though circumstance is not kind, the years pass and she returns to her family. The creation of the railroad brings new workers to her town. One young man falls in love with Emmeline, and takes her as his wife. But the wedding celebration reveals terrible complications. Tobias Picker’s unabashedly Romantic score sets Judith Rossner’s retelling of the Oedipus story from Jocasta’s point of view. “Emmeline promotes an old habit of music that three generations of nontonalists have been unable to break: that harmony of the spirit equals musical consonance. It is a pleasure to come across a new American opera that works this well.” –Bernard Holland, The New York Times
Single Tickets: Presale $35 General/$32 Senior & Student, Door $38/35. Subscription: save 20%.
*American Beauty Cinnabar mounts exquisite renditions of American Opera Classics, many rarely performed, all compelling, beautiful and above all, worth producing for generations to come. |
