Transformations
Anne Sexton / Conrad Susa

Reviewed in the Bohemian By David Templeton
'Transformations' blends fairy tales, music and madness
...Transformations, adapted from the book of the same name by the Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Anne Sexton, itself a poetic reinterpretation of several famous fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm. In the smart, gorgeously sung production that opened last weekend, Cinnabar re-embraces its own experimental roots and delivers a Transformations that is as entertaining and satisfying as it is musically challenging and mesmerizingly, thrillingly strange.

A cast of eight singers runs the gamut of the Brothers Grimm, from Rapunzel to
Rumplestiltskin, from Sleeping Beauty to the Seven Dwarves in Sexton’s strangely
hilarious, personalized mutation of cherished fairy tale, lacing her poetic
reimaginings with humorous observations, sly references to television, pop
culture and the foibles of Twentieth Century living. Susa’s ingeniously
accessible score is jazzy and melodic, with wry nods to Weill, Sondheim, Ives
and the Andrews Sisters, not to mention Gustav Mahler.
