Donald Margulies
Collected Stories
When someone tells you in confidence a blazing incident from his or her past, has it been released to the world? Do people have the right to capitalize on the less-than-savory experience of others, once they¹ve been divulged? You may find these questions no-brainers, but the boundary between what is public and private has become blurred in today's confessional, Jerry Springer society.
The right to privacy and to keep a secret are just two of the issues explored in Pulitzer Prize-winning author Donald Margulies' terrifically thought-provoking play, "Collected Stories". With elements reminiscent of the classic 1950 film "All About Eve", "Collected Stories" spans the
volatile six-year relationship between Ruth, a brilliant but aging short-story writer, and her young and ambitious protégée Lisa. It's very funny. It's very smart. It gets pretty intense, too.

Woody Weingarten, Novato Advance, June 4, 2009. Two-character ‘Collected Stories’ is nearly perfect comic drama
“Perfect” isn’t a word I’ve used before as a critic or reviewer. But “Collected Stories,” playing through June 13 at Petaluma’s Cinnabar Theater, forces me to gush superlatives.
Everything about the comic drama deserves at least the appellation “nearly perfect.”
The two-member cast is inspired....Their timing, either to evoke laughter or to make one wince with discomfort at human frailty, is exquisite.
The intimacy is powerful and compelling. Perfect, you might say. More...
Dan Taylor, Press Democrat, May 28, 2009. Good 'Stories' told well
The current Ensemble Theater Collective (ETC) production of Donald Margulies’ “Collected Stories” at the Cinnabar Theater is a standout.
An intelligent, literate script, combined with strong direction by Elizabeth Craven and excellent performances by Carol Mayo Jenkins and Anna Bullard, as a writer and her protegé, make this show hard to beat. More...
Dan Taylor, Press Democrat blogs , May 28, 2009. Two women, good with words
The play is an intellectual, literary game of cat and mouse, but after awhile, it's hard to tell who is the cat and who is the mouse. The actresses make the intelligent script crackle with energy.
This latest presentation by director Elizabeth Craven of ETC (and Santa Rosa's 6th Street Playhouse) and Cinnabar head Elly Lichenstein is a must for local theater lovers. More...

What amazes me is how incredible community theatre is. We don't have to drive all the way to the City to see quality work. It's here-in our backyard, waiting for us to attend, absorb, go home feeling full and contemplative. More here... or here...

“Collected Stories,” follows the six-year relationship between Steiner, an aging short story writer, and her young literary student, Morrison.
The beginning scene has an intriguing balance between the calm, experienced Steiner and the very insecure, young Morrison. It’s an energy the two actresses communicate well to the audience.
Their relationship deepens, but also strains as Steiner becomes uncomfortable with Morrison’s talent and the question of jealousy arises.
The chemistry between Jenkins and Bullard are what really makes this production of “Collected Stories” shine.
While full of humor, “Collected Stories” is thought provoking and explores issues of privacy rights and loyalty — leaving the audience to decide about who is right or wrong. More...
