Cinnabar Young Repertory Theater presents:
Lady, Be Good!
By George and Ira Gershwin
Stage Direction
by Eileen Morris
Music Direction by Jared Emerson-Johnson
This musical was the first time George collaborated with his brother Ira, whose lyrics here are an often witty delight, rhyming rumba with succumba and under my thumba, and promising, with ample justification, that "there's no sensation like syncopation".
The original production starred Fred Astaire and his sister Adele as a pair of well-to-do siblings who suddenly find themselves homeless and having to think fast on their feet to survive.
The book, by Guy Bolton and Fred Thompson, is in the great tradition of American screwball comedy, involving a hobo who turns out to be a multi-millionaire, a despicable Mexican hit-man, a silly dipsomaniac and a corrupt but eminently likeable lawyer. The caper ends, as one always knew it would, in multiple weddings.

“It’s a hilarious show and one the kids are really having a good time putting together,” said director Eileen Morris. “Since 1996, we’ve been doing an operetta with the kids every year. We thought ‘Lady, Be Good’ would be a nice change. It’s a fun play that’s also very musically challenging. They’re doing a great job with it.”
