La Curandera by Robert X. Rodriguez - West Coast Premiere
by Robert X. Rodriguez - West Coast Premiere

and

Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni
by Pietro Mascagni

A double bill of Latin magic and passion!

First, Cavalleria Rusticana, Mascagni's fiery Italian tale of lust, jealousy and revenge, a combination of swift-moving drama and powerfully emotional music pure operatic excitement, full of tempestuous passions, smoldering jealousies and sweeping melodies.

Then it's off to Rodriguez' Mexico, where the same emotions are turned on their heads for a comic romp. La Curandera, inspired by Mozart's Bastien and Bastienne, our sorcerer is a curandera, a Mexican practitioner of folk healing and magic. Spanish proverbs and idiomatic expressions abound, as well as actual incantations and rituals from Mexican folklore. Listen for homages to Mexico, mariachi and Mozart in Rodriguez' characteristic richly lyrical (Musical America) writing, full of the composer's 'all-encompassing sense of humor' (Los Angeles Times).

Robert Rodriguez’s

La Curandera

La CuranderaCinnabar Theater presents the West Coast premiere of Robert Rodriguez’s re-envisioning of Mozart’s comic opera, "Bastien und Bastienne," in a Mexican setting.

"La Curandera" is a comic opera in one act for family audiences. A wonderful introduction, both to the intriguing and glorious world of opera and to the vibrant and ageless world of Mexican folklore.

Dallas composer Robert Xavier Rodriguez has created a charming and delightful score chock full of musical references to his home country, Mexico. Listen for the Mexican National Anthem, traditional folk tunes and much more.

A Curandera is a Mexican sorceress. She is one of many instances in Mexican folklore where the natural and the supernatural, the real and the magic, are treated as two sides of the same coin. Plus, lots of idiomatic expressions, popular proverbs from Mexico and Spain pop up throughout. Read more about La Curandera at Cinnabar Theater
