The Line Up
FIERCE DANCE COMPANY presentation
Rauly Dueñas, founder and creative director
of FIERCE Dance Company, is a seasoned performer,
choreographer, and master class presenter. He has
worked with numerous headliners including Mariah
Carey and Earth Wind and Fire and is an Alumnus
of San Francisco's “Culture Shock.” Rauly
has also taught workshops in more than 16 different
countries. His approach combines irresistible movement,
fierce style and biomechanics; perfectly mixed
to dazzle the eye yet protect the body, all in
a non-competitive, inclusive atmosphere.
Each day of the Hip Hop Festival will be opened with a presentation from Rauly Dueñas’ Fierce Dance Company students, aged 9-adult.
HYPNO presents “Hypno,
Astro-N-Matter”
This U.S. National Dance Champion has performed
for Cirque de Sole, Dance Fever and national
U.S. tours as well as in Europe. His one-man
dance/theater piece was developed for the NY
Downtown Urban Theater Festival and makes its
West Coast premiere here at the North Bay Hip
Hop Theater Festival.
PARADISE FREEJALOVE presents “Shock
the World: Malcolm Martin Muhammad Ali!”
A one-man show about a young man at a crossroad
trying to decide which way to turn, when he suddenly
begins to hear voices and see visions of his elders
and ancestors. Performed at the AfroSolo Arts Festival
and the Brava Theater with Colored Ink.
AZEEM presents “Rude
Boy”
An accomplished performing/recording artist with
extensive stage experience, Azeem was ranked
second in the national slam under the alias “Invisible
Man.” He has just returned from performing
his one-man show, Rude Boy, at the Lincoln Center
in NYC.
SHANTELL HERNDON presents “Eden”
Actress/Writer Shantell Herndon presents a young
girl’s journey into adulthood; a journey
fraught with both self-inflicted pain and love.
Eden explores how childhood experiences can deeply
affect one’s development as an adult. While
this character is unique in her cultural background
and personal experiences, she is a close mirror
of a society that often craves “normality” above
individuality and self-realization. Eden shows
what happens when someone takes off their mask
and allows others to see the vulnerable spirit
underneath. A spirit wanting the basic elements
of survival: sustenance, love and companionship.
FELONIOUS: onelovehiphop
presents “Beatbox:
A Raparetta” and “Stateless”
Beatbox: A Raparetta is a play in rhythm and rhyme,
accompanied by beat box (vocal drum beats) and
a DJ. Beatbox follows the story of two stepbrothers,
Finch and Tet, as they try to keep their lives
together after the death of their parents. In development
since 1995, Beatbox has been performed at San Jose
Repertory Theater, The Last Day Saloon, and several
South Bay Juvenile Halls and Correctional Facilities.
Felonious has also performed Beatbox in Hamburg,
Germany as part of Die Wűste Lebt, a theater
festival for young actors and directors, produced
by the Hamburger-Kammerspiele
Stateless combines Hip Hop music with German and Jewish History to explore how fate fuels creativity to transcend the effects of war. After Dan finds a 42-page letter written by his grandfather he, along with beat boxer Tommy Shepherd, follows the melody of a traditional Hamburg song back to the homeland of his family. Stateless will be performed in May/June 2005 at Intersection for the Arts.
About Felonious: onelovehiphop
Felonious: onelovehiphop is a live Hip Hop band based in San Francisco, CA. and is dedicated to recreating the produced Hip Hop sound with a live band. The live instrumentation allows for an intricate musical texture. The precision beats of Soulati (Tommy Shepherd) lay the foundation for this four-man DJ team. The reggae, Latin, funk and jazz bass lines of Illin Ills (Dylan Mills) sets the vibe. A Kid Named Keith’s (Keith Pinto) keyboard sounds begin with the Fender Rhodes and travel through a unique blend of pianos, strings and wind instruments. Emcees D. Wolf (Dan Wolf) and Infinite (Carlos Aguirre) ride the music with poetic and rapid-fire lyrics. A Kid Named Keith steps out from behind his keys to add to the rhyming frenzy, while Soulati plays drums and raps. Jon Monahan’s virtuoso guitar playing provides the melodic icing on the cake. Spontaneous freestyles and two of the freshest beatboxers on the west coast (Soulati and Infinite) make Felonious: onelovehiphop’s live show untouchable. Guitarist Jon Monahan appears with Felonious as a guest artist.
KID BEYOND (Andrew Chaikin)
What takes most people an entire band to produce,
Kid Beyond executes with his own mouth. His talent
extends beyond percussion: He also sings in and around
the beats, records bits and pieces of his performance
in real time using foot pedals, then loops it back
live, so he's riffing with himself. The results include
eerie orchestrations that make you feel you're in the
presence of a higher power and psychedelic trance that
makes you want to get up and dance. Best Beatboxer:
Kid Beyond, SF Weekly, Best of SF 2004
“…a sound-effect maestro, a synthesizer
personified.” SF Examiner
“He is amazing, and the audience members
felt like they were witnessing something new, something
this jaded music writer could not entirely understand,
much less put into words.” SF Weekly
“The virtuoso skills of beatboxer Kid
Beyond <are> endlessly innovative” SF Chronicle
SHOTGUN WEDDING QUINTET
Formed in 2002 - The Shotgun Wedding Quintet is a
group of 5 powerful musical personalities with
the sound of a 10-piece band…literally.
By taking advantage of modern technology, these
guys use funky electronic sampling devices to layer
their sound, an original technique this band has
mastered.
Founder and co-composer Adam Thies holds down his duties on the bass while also playing the trombone and didgeridoo. Joe Cohen performs on the keyboard and laptop while playing and sampling his saxophone. Vocalist Dublin communicates on levels never before seen on the microphone with his mix of freestyle/scatting/spoken word and also leads the string section on his electric violin. Up and coming Bay Area DJ/Producer Aspect plays a role never filled by a turn-tableist before, by dropping beats and samples to build up the body of sound; all produced on his record players and CD turntable. Last, but not least, Bay Area percussion guru Eric Garland adds the backbone of the band by sampling and looping his drums while playing them live. All these elements mixed together create the lush soundscape of The Shotgun Wedding Quintet.
THE SUICIDE KINGS present “In
Spite of Everything”
In Spite of Everything: A 90s fusion of award-winning
slam poetry, rapid fire comedy, a cappella hip
hop and punk rock theatrics performed by this
spoken word trio from Oakland, CA. This highly
interactive night of storytelling weaves together
the trio’s autobiographical journeys through
fatherhood, gang violence, immigration, menial
employment, imperialism, addiction, murder and,
finally, their evolution into high school poetry
teachers. Reaching far beyond the lives that
almost killed them, they prove that salvation
is not merely for the pious but also for the
poet.
