This inspiring and poignant play takes place during the night the great transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau was imprisoned for an act of civil disobedience in 1846. Thoreau had refused to pay a tax in defiance of the Polk Administration’s involvement in the Mexican War. Believing this undeclared war to be unjust, he was beginning his sojourn into Civil Disobedience. Told in a series of dreamlike sequences that explore and describe his theory of education, his family ties and his strong oppositions to slavery, the play explores Thoreau’s life, ideals and philosophies.
Katie Watts, Argus Courier, March 2, 2005: "'The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail,' presented by Cinnabar's Teen Acting Ensemble, is based on historical events, a serious drama that has great relevance today"
