La Curandera is a comic opera in one act for family audiences: a wonderful introduction, both to the intriguing and glorious world of opera and to the vibrant and ageless world of Mexican folklore. TEX: Internationally acclaimed composer Robert Xavier Rodriguez has created a charming and delightful score chock full of Mexican musical references. Listen for the Mexican National Anthem, traditional folk tunes and much more. MEX: A Curandera is a Mexican sorceress. She is one of many instances in Mexican folklore where the natural and the supernatural, the real and the magic, are treated as two sides of the same coin. Plus, lots of idiomatic expressions popular proverbs from Mexico and Spain pop up throughout. SEX: Well, lots of romance and love, really! MIX MOZART: Curandera is loosely based on a short opera by W.A. Mozart called Bastien and Bastienne. Rodriguez gives a loving musical nod to the Grand Master all during our Curandera’s escapades. HEX: The Curandera heals by magic according to the folklore of Mexico. FIX: Through her wisdom, craft and humor, two lovers find their way back to each other’s arms.

Curandissimo is the ancient pre-Columbian tradition of native medicine and faith healing that was very nearly wiped out by the Conquistidors. La Curandera today is sometimes made fun of as a sourcerer who for a price can cast a romantic spell. A special feature of Cinnabar's Opera in the Schools program is the Curriculum Tie-In Kit that helps orient students to the opera and provides follow-up lessons such as the background of La Curandera and a glossery of Spanish phrases that appear in the production
