Denise Hewitt
Volunteer of the Month – August
Why Volunteer of the Month?
Denise Hewitt is always ready to lend a hand. She has worked backstage, in the lobby and in the costume shop. She also single-handedly manages the tile painting workshops for the Great Wall of Children (outside the studio…take a look!) and has organized more cast parties than she probably cares to remember! But the best part is this: after years of service to Cinnabar, Denise continues to serve with genuine warmth and a sunny, smiling face. Thank you, Denise!
About Denise
Denise Hewitt was born in San Francisco and raised in Millbrae, Ca. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Therapy from San Jose State University and currently enjoys a career as a Home Care Occupational Therapist. She is married to David Hewitt and together they have a teenaged daughter, Kailey. As far as hobbies and interests go, Denise says, “There’s not much time left after one of my favorite interests: my daughter. I spend time helping at places that help her, like Cinnabar and her high school, St. Vincent de Paul. I also enjoy volunteering at our church, St. Elizabeth Seton.
Denise and Cinnabar
“I heard about Cinnabar from a co-worker and P.T. (physical therapist) Jane Sell. She talked about her kids’ involvement there. At the time Kailey was only four years old, but I knew she would love something like this. I signed Kailey up for classes when she was six and she loved it. Then, when she was eight years old, she did her first Summer Camp and was hooked. I so enjoyed seeing her make friends and perform. I wanted to get involved too.
“After the summer camp, Kailey auditioned for the Christmas musical and she and I have been involved ever since. I started helping with lobby, backstage and cast parties. That led to helping with costumes and eventually participating in the Parent Guild.”
How has her family benefited from involvement with Cinnabar? “Kailey has benefited so much!! She has not only grown in her performing skills, she has made such wonderful, supportive friends. I also believe she has had wonderful adult mentors in the directors and staff at Cinnabar. David and I are grateful for the influence Cinnabar has had on the character development of our daughter. I have also benefited by meeting the Cinnabar staff and many parents who have become good friends.” |
