Anita Walden, Set Designer
for THE ROAD TO MECCA
“Anita met
Cinnabar Founder Marvin Klebe and Artistic Director
Elly Lichenstein in 1979, when we were helping
the now defunct Marin Opera Company to get on its
feet. Marvin directed, Elly made costumes,
and Anita was a fledgling make-up artist. After
that, Anita tripped off to LA to do bloody faces
and monsters for Hollywood, but she soon returned
to the North Country to regain her senses.
Since then, she has worked with numerous companies,
making dinosaurs for science museums, totem poles
for casinos, etc. Her free time, such as
it is, is devoted to Cinnabar and other nonprofits
who cherish her free spirit and unbounded imagination. She
can make art out of ANYTHING.
Our favorite Anita projects here at Cinnabar include
the famous food hats for The Star, the wacky
wigs for La Bête, the crazy clocks
for The Spanish Hour, and now the glorious
set for our September-October production of The
Road to Mecca. Anyone can own an original
Anita Walden set piece, since she insists that
we sell them off by silent auction and keep the
proceeds for Cinnabar.”
